Tip and Bill Split Calculator

This tip and bill split calculator works out the tip and splits the total between any number of people. Choose whether to tip on the amount before or after tax, round each share up for easy paying, and compare common tip percentages at a glance.

How the split works

  1. Tip = bill before tax (or total with tax) × tip %.
  2. Total = bill + tax + tip.
  3. Each share = total ÷ number of people, rounded up if you choose.

Worked example

Four people share a $120 bill with $9.90 tax. A 20% tip on the pre-tax amount is $24, making $153.90, or $38.48 each. Rounding up to the nearest dollar gives $39 each, adding $2.10 to the tip.

Tipping customs in the US, Canada, UK and Australia

Country Restaurants
United States About 15–20% is customary for table service
Canada About 15–20% is common
United Kingdom A service charge (often 12.5%) may be added; otherwise around 10–12.5% is usual
Australia and New Zealand Tipping is not expected; around 10% for great service is appreciated

Check the bill first: if a service charge is already included, you do not need to tip again.

Frequently asked questions

Should I tip on the amount before or after tax?

Etiquette guides usually suggest tipping on the pre-tax amount, but many people tip on the total for simplicity. The calculator handles both.

How do I split a bill unevenly?

Work out each person’s items first, then apply the same tip percentage to each person’s subtotal.

Is 18% or 20% standard in the US?

For sit-down restaurants, 18% to 20% is common today, with 15% for basic service.

Do I tip on a service charge?

No. A service charge is already the tip, unless the restaurant states otherwise.
