Worked example

A single employee earning $75,000, paid every two weeks, with 5% going to a 401(k) and $2,400 a year in pre-tax health premiums in Ohio takes home about $2,092.66 per paycheck, or $54,409 a year (using the local rate shown in the calculator).

Ohio city income taxes

Most Ohio cities and villages tax wages, commonly at 1.5% to 2.5%. Columbus and Cleveland charge 2.5%, for example. Some school districts also levy an income tax. Enter your combined local rate in the calculator; your employer withholds the tax for the city where you work, and you may owe or get credit from your home city.

How to raise your take-home pay

  • Check your federal Form W-4 and Ohio withholding form so you are not over-withheld.
  • Use pre-tax benefits such as a health savings account (HSA) or flexible spending account.
  • Remember that 401(k) contributions lower your paycheck today but also lower your taxable income.

Frequently asked questions

What is the Ohio income tax rate for 2026?

A flat 2.75% on taxable income above $26,050. Income up to $26,050 is not taxed.

Do I pay city income tax in Ohio?

Usually yes. Most Ohio municipalities tax wages, commonly at 1.5% to 2.5%.

Does a 401(k) reduce Ohio income tax?

Yes for state tax, because Ohio starts from federal AGI. Most Ohio cities, however, tax wages before 401(k) deferrals.

How do I change my withholding?

Give your employer a new federal Form W-4 and, if needed, a new Ohio withholding certificate. The IRS Tax Withholding Estimator can help you choose the right entries.
