Why add up your subscriptions?

Small recurring charges are easy to forget. Seeing them as a yearly total, sorted from most to least expensive, makes it clear which ones are worth keeping.

How the totals are worked out

  • Monthly prices × 12, weekly × 52, quarterly × 4, yearly × 1, added together for the yearly total.
  • The investment comparison assumes the monthly equivalent is invested at the end of each month at your chosen return.

Worked example

Video streaming at $15.49, music at $11.99, cloud storage at $2.99, a $40 gym and $4 news each month, plus $99 a year for software, add up to $992.64 a year, about $82.72 a month. Invested at 7% instead, that would grow to about $14,318 in 10 years.

How to cut subscription costs

  • Cancel services you have not used in the past month; you can usually rejoin later.
  • Rotate streaming services instead of keeping them all at once.
  • Switch to yearly billing for services you use all year.
  • Check for family plans, student discounts and bundles.
  • Set a reminder before free trials end.

Frequently asked questions

How do I find all my subscriptions?

Go through the last two or three months of bank and card statements and look for recurring charges. Your phone’s app store settings also list app subscriptions.

Is yearly billing always cheaper?

Usually per month, but it locks you in. Choose yearly only for services you are sure to use all year.

What counts as a subscription?

Any recurring charge: streaming, music, software, cloud storage, gyms, memberships, meal kits, delivery passes and app subscriptions.

Why compare with investing?

It shows the long-term opportunity cost. Money that compounds for years can grow to far more than the sum of the payments.
