This HSA calculator uses the 2026 IRS limits to show how much you can put in a health savings account, how much tax you save, and how your balance could grow if you invest it. It allows for employer contributions, the age-55 catch-up and part-year coverage.
2026 HSA limits
| Self-only | Family | |
|---|---|---|
| Contribution limit | $4,400 | $8,750 |
| Catch-up (age 55+) | +$1,000 | +$1,000 |
| HDHP minimum deductible | $1,700 | $3,400 |
| HDHP out-of-pocket maximum | $8,500 | $17,000 |
The limit includes employer contributions.
The triple tax advantage
- Contributions are tax-deductible, or pre-tax through payroll, which also avoids Social Security and Medicare tax.
- Growth is tax-free.
- Withdrawals for qualified medical expenses are tax-free.
After 65, you can withdraw for any purpose without penalty, paying income tax on non-medical withdrawals, much like a traditional IRA.
Worked example
With self-only coverage all year, a $500 employer contribution and $3,900 of your own through payroll, you hit the $4,400 limit. In the 22% bracket with 5% state tax, you save about $1,351 in tax. Investing $4,400 a year for 25 years at 6% on top of a $5,000 balance could grow to about $262,900.
Frequently asked questions
Who can contribute to an HSA?
People covered by an HSA-eligible high-deductible health plan with no other disqualifying coverage, who are not enrolled in Medicare and cannot be claimed as a dependent.
What happens if I contribute too much?
Excess contributions face a 6% excise tax each year unless you withdraw the excess and its earnings by the tax filing deadline.
Does HSA money expire?
No. Unlike an FSA, the balance rolls over every year and stays yours if you change jobs.
Do all states give an HSA tax break?
Most do, but California and New Jersey tax HSA contributions and earnings at the state level.
