Hours Calculator

This hours calculator works out how long you worked between a start and end time, minus any unpaid break. It handles overnight shifts and gives decimal hours for timesheets and pay.

How hours are calculated

The calculator converts both times to minutes, subtracts the start from the end and removes the break. If the end time is earlier than the start, it assumes the shift ran past midnight and adds 24 hours.

Decimal hours = total minutes ÷ 60

Worked example

A shift from 9:00 AM to 5:30 PM with a 30-minute unpaid break is 8 hours 30 minutes minus 30 minutes = 8.00 hours. At $20 an hour, that is $160 before tax.
