This payback period calculator shows how long it takes for an investment to pay for itself. It handles equal or uneven yearly cash flows and also gives the discounted payback period, which accounts for the time value of money.

Payback period formulas
Even cash flows: payback period = initial investment ÷ yearly cash flow
Uneven cash flows: add the cash flows year by year; payback is the last full year before the total turns positive, plus the fraction of the next year needed to cover what is left.
Discounted payback does the same with each cash flow first discounted to today’s value: CFₜ ÷ (1 + r)ᵗ.
Worked example
A $50,000 solar or equipment upgrade saves $12,000 a year. The payback period is 50,000 ÷ 12,000 = 4.17 years (about 4 years 2 months). Discounting the savings at 8% stretches the payback to about 5.28 years.
Pros and cons of payback period
| Advantages | Limitations |
|---|---|
| Easy to calculate and explain | Ignores cash flows after payback |
| Shows how long money is at risk | Simple version ignores the time value of money |
| Useful when cash is tight | Does not measure profitability |
Use payback as a quick screen, then confirm with the IRR calculator or NPV.
Frequently asked questions
What is a good payback period?
Shorter is generally better, but it depends on the asset’s life. A payback well inside the asset’s useful life, such as under half of it, is usually comfortable.
What is the difference between payback and discounted payback?
Simple payback counts cash at face value. Discounted payback first converts each future cash flow to today’s value, so it is always longer.
Can I use this for solar panels or energy upgrades?
Yes. Enter the installed cost after incentives as the investment, and the yearly savings on bills as the cash flow.
Why does payback say “not reached”?
The cash flows you entered do not add up to the investment, so it is not paid back within that period.
Should payback be the only decision rule?
No. It ignores everything after break-even, so a project with a slightly longer payback may still earn far more overall.
