Worked example
A product sells for $29.99 and costs $7 to make and ship to the US. With a 15% referral fee ($4.50), a $5 FBA fee, $0.10 storage, $0.50 inbound shipping, $3 of advertising per unit and 300 sales a month on the Professional plan, profit is about $9.76 per unit, a 32.5% margin and about $2,927 a month.
What is break-even ACoS?
ACoS (advertising cost of sales) is ad spend divided by ad sales. Your break-even ACoS is your profit margin before advertising: if your ACoS is above it, each ad sale loses money.
Frequently asked questions
How much does Amazon take per sale?
For most categories, a 15% referral fee plus the FBA fulfillment fee if Amazon ships the order. On a $30 item, total fees are often 30% to 40% of the price.
Is the Professional plan worth it?
If you sell more than about 40 items a month, yes: $39.99 a month costs less than $0.99 per item, and it unlocks advertising and other tools.
What is a good profit margin on Amazon?
Many sellers aim for 20% to 30% after all fees and advertising, but it depends on your category and how much you advertise.
What fees does this not include?
Returns processing, long-term storage, removal and disposal, inbound placement and low-inventory fees, which can apply depending on your products and stock levels.
