This tile calculator works out how many tiles and boxes you need for a floor, wall or backsplash. Enter the area, tile size and a waste allowance for cuts and breakage.
How tiles are calculated
Tiles = (area ÷ area of one tile) × (1 + waste %), rounded up to whole tiles.
A 10% allowance is common for simple layouts. Diagonal or herringbone patterns and rooms with many corners often need 15% or more.
Worked example
A 12 × 10 ft floor is 120 sq ft. A 12 × 12 inch tile covers 1 sq ft, so you need 120 tiles, or 132 tiles with 10% extra. With 10 tiles per box, buy 14 boxes.
Frequently asked questions
How do I measure an L-shaped room?
Split it into rectangles, work out each area, and add them. You can use the square footage calculator for each part.
Should I keep spare tiles?
Yes. Tiles from a later batch may not match in color, so keep a few for repairs.
